Way of compassion at Lourdes

Way of compassion at Lourdes

The way of compassion, across the Sanctuary, is an original initiative that offers concrete help and support by means of listening and prayer, to families facing a child’s death: unborn child, deceased or “missing”. This path is also more widely open to all those who, marked by life’s trials, need consolation. Families are thus guided and accompanied in their inner consolation approach.

At the end of their journey, parents are invited to write down the name of their child in a “Book of Life”, as prayer intentions which will be prayed for by nuns in the vicinity and pilgrims.

Along the path of compassion at Lourdes, families are accompanied by the Gospels of Jesus’ childhood. This path begins at the foot of the Crowned Virgin statue, continues with the joyful mysteries of the Rosary basilica, followed by a time of meditation in front of the Massabielle Grotto. Families then head to the Good Samaritan rotunda to write down the name of the unborn or missing child.

At this end of this journey, families can add a candle to the chapels of light, thus joining all those deposited by pilgrims at Lourdes for their prayers to continue even after their departure.

Those who wish can finish this pathway joining in the prayer of the rosary, which takes place starting at 3:30 PM at the Grotto of Lourdes.

It’s about entering in an approach, which we could call “Magnificat of hope”. The Magnificat is not the song of those for whom everything is well, but swells from hearts marked by ordeals, and able to continue onward trustingly, like Mary and Bernadette.”

(Fr. André Cabes, previous Rector of the Sanctuary)
