The Candles

In Lourdes, we light candles to entrust the Virgin Mary with all our intentions, the burning flame prolonging our prayers.

It was on 19th February 1858, that Bernadette went to the Grotto for the first time with a candle and it was on 7th April, Easter Wednesday, that the flame of the candle she was holding in her hand licked her fingers without burning them.

You can light candles, like millions of pilgrims before you, in the Chapels of Light, opposite the Grotto, on the far side of the Gave.

Lord Jesus, light of the world, I present this candle to you.
May it symbolise my desire to make the offering of my life to you.
Warm my heart, burn all selfishness.
May this candle symbolise my prayers for my family,
my colleagues, my friends, my parish, and all those
who asked me to pray for them in this blessed place.
May your light illuminate the whole world.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?” Ps 27 :1
