Permanent doctor of the Bureau of Medical Observations
From mid-April 2026, Dr Giada Monami will take up the position of permanent physician at the Bureau of Medical Observations at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes.
The first woman to be appointed to this position, she succeeds Dr Alessandro de Franciscis, who has had a significant impact during his 17 years of service in the medical discernment of cures reported in Lourdes. His unwavering commitment, scientific rigour and loyalty to the mission of the Sanctuary have contributed to the international reputation of the Bureau of Medical Observations.
A surgeon, specialist in internal medicine and also a pharmacist, Dr Giada Monami has extensive academic and hospital experience. After graduating in pharmacy from the University of Trieste (Italy) in 2002, she went on to obtain her degree in medicine and surgery with honours (summa cum laude) from the University of Udine (Italy) in 2014, before specialising in internal medicine, also with honours, at the University of Verona (Italy) in 2020.
A physician, she has over ten years of professional experience in hospitals and has practised in several leading hospitals in Italy, including the University Hospital of Verona, the Don Calabria Hospital in Negrar di Verona and the San Giovanni e Paolo Hospital in Venice. Her clinical work has led her to treat patients with complex and multimorbidity, particularly in the cardiovascular and cardiometabolic fields, with a comprehensive and personalised approach to care. During the Covid-19 health crisis (2020-2021), she was on the front line in emergency consultations and emergency situations at the Verona hospital, helping to assist patients in critical conditions.
Her career is also notable for her extensive research experience: from 2003 to 2007, she worked at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia (United States) on the molecular mechanisms involved in cell proliferation, migration and tumour metastasis. She is the author of several publications in international scientific journals. Giada Monami has presented her work at international conferences and acts as a consultant to scientific communities. She is a member of the Italian Society of Internal Medicine and was a member of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).
A Catholic, Dr Monami has had a special connection with Lourdes since childhood, particularly through her father’s involvement as a doctor accompanying pilgrimages. For the past ten years, she herself has been a volunteer doctor with UNITALSI (the Treviso regional branch), accompanying sick and frail people to the Sanctuary. Her last pilgrimage to Lourdes was in September 2025.
