Wednesday, 31st May 2023, Feast of the Visitation

On Wednesday, 31st May, the Church will be celebrating the Feast of the Visitation: Mary went to visit her cousin, Elisabeth, who was pregnant. John the Baptist leapt for joy in his mother’s womb in the presence of the Messiah. It was during this visit that Mary prayed the Magnificat, which sprung from her happiness: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.”

Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod is proposing a time of Marian prayer on Wednesday, 31st May 2023, in preparation for the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary and for the conclusion of the Marian month.

In Lourdes, this time of prayer will take place during the Marian procession at 9 p.m.

Programme for the day

9:30 a.m.: International Mass at the Basilica of Saint Pius X followed by the Angelus at the Grotto
3:00 p.m.: Rosary at the Grotto
5:00 p.m.: Eucharistic procession and blessing of the sick
9:00 p.m.: Marian procession and Marian prayer for the Synodal Process.
At the Information Centre and on the website of the Sanctuary, there is a whole series of activities on offer to pilgrims to ensure that their stay in Lourdes is a time of prayer and meditation with all pilgrims from all over the world.

New

The path of compassion, from Monday 12th June: every day from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The path of compassion, through the Sanctuary, is an original initiative that offers practical help and support, through listening and prayer, to families faced with the loss of a child: stillborn, deceased or missing. This path is also open to all those whose lives have been scarred by hardship, and who are in need of consolation. Through this path, families can be guided and supported in their journey to inner solace.

At the end of the route, parents are invited to write their child’s first name in a “Book of Life”, like as a prayer intention that will be offered by nuns in the area, and by pilgrims.

Register at the Information Centre the day before your arrival or before 12 noon on the day of your visit.

Mary, the mother of God, is always with us on the synodal path, for she is also ‘Mother of the Church’ (Mater Ecclesiae); mother of all those who are companions and disciples of her son. Whenever we are feeling lost, confused, or hesitant about the way, we only have to look to her to point out the way. Mary does not speak. She does not need to. She only needs to direct our gaze to her son. In her wordless gesture, she sums up the whole mission of the Church. Even when the People of God are ‘in via’—on the journey—they are always in mission. The two cannot be separated, for there is but one way and one object of our desire, one source of our life and our hope: Jesus Christ.
